Wheels & Fins Soap Box Race

Last Sunday (10th September) we were at the Wheels and Fins Festival where we participated in their corporate soapbox race with our very own Ollie Evans behind the wheel. For those who have never heard of soapbox racing, it is where you use a lot of creativity and a little building experience to create a non-motorized vehicle with only brute strength and gravity from a long downhill track for momentum.   This unique, non-motorized racing event challenges both experienced racers and amateurs alike to design and build outrageous soapbox dream machines and compete against the clock in a downhill race.

For those not familiar with ‘Wheels and Fins Festival’, it is a three-day action sports and music festival overlooking the ocean at Joss Bay, Broadstairs, Kent. Events include; the UK Mini Ramp Champs, The UK BMX Flatland Champs, Surf & Sup events, Soapbox Racing, Outdoor Main Stage, Live Music Venues, DJ’s, and of course, Craft Beer & Cider.

Ollie Evans approached us a while back mentioning he was going to enter the soap box race to help raise awareness for Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. We wanted to help him in any way we could and did so by entering him in the competition and getting his soap box wrapped in white along with logos. None of us had ever participated in a soap box race and to make things worse it was also the first time the soap box had been ridden, so no one quite knew what to expect.

After a full day of racing and despite the front wheel flying off during the obstacle course (pictured below) Ollie managed to place 2nd overall, a great result and all in all, a fantastic day. Hopefully, thanks to Ollies work, there are now a lot more people aware of Hodgkin’s Lymphoma.
