Challenge Tour - Cordon Open

Last week a member of the team was lucky enough to experience what it was like to be a caddy on a professional platform. Robert Blanchard whose role is Sales & Marketing was invited by Max Orrin to caddy on the Challenge Tour. Having attempted to become a professional golfer however realising the dream was just out of reach Robert jumped at the opportunity to experience tour life all be it from an alternative role to the one he once dreamed of.

A 5 hour drive to Pleneuf on the south west tip of France was swiftly followed by a pro-Am – No rest for the wicked.

The cut was made, all be it just! With a total of 10 birdies and 10 bogies through the first two rounds it was soon clear to the pair that a yard to the left or right of your landing spot could be the difference between a tap in birdie or coming back off the green by 50 yards.

Day 3, also known as moving day lived up to its name with max setting the course on fire by birdieing 10/18 holes to move up 55 spots and get into the penultimate group on Sunday.

The morning of the last round had arrived and Robert said he was without a doubt more nervous than max and all he had to do was carry the bag, clean the ball or hold a flag. The round was once again off to flyer crossing after 9 at 2 under par – both were pumped now seeing as they had scored better on the back 9 over the previous 3 days. The dream was not to be however, no matter what they tried the course did not want to reward max for his efforts with 2 flag hits sending the ball hurtling off the green or great shots spinning off greens into bunkers.

After a week of ups and downs – literally seeing as the course was on the side of a mountain – the pair finished in T16. This is what Robert had to say about his week, “I am extremely grateful for the invitation from Max, it will go down in my mind as one of the best moments in my life getting to experience tournament life all be it not as a player, It was a pleasure just to see the level that these lads play too, a real eye opener to what hard work and dedication can bring. Regarding how max played I was amazed, even though we have been friends for over a decade and grew up playing golf together, the shots he hit on the majority of holes just had me gasping, the control he had over the ball is astounding and I’m still in shock how he doesn’t win every week! Even though we didn’t get the win all in all a great week and I can’t wait to do it again – providing I get the call up of course”
