The Powelly Plate
Powelly Plate 2015
There are two prominent things that stand out on the last Friday before Christmas. Copious amounts of Christmas shopping and the Hi-Way Services sponsored golf event at the prestigious North Foreland Golf Club in Broadstairs, Kent.
The ‘Powelly Plate’ has been played on the famous cliff top course for the past 24 years and is a firm fixture in the golfing calendar. The 2015 event hosted 30 entrants with a mixture of visitors and members alike.
The format of the day has remained the same since year one and comprises a meet and greet in the ‘Halfway House’ where an obligatory port and brandy with ‘Powelly’ is consumed by the hardy souls in preparation for the 27 holes ahead (18 morning for the main trophy, 9 afternoon). Here, young and old chew the fat on previous encounters and how they will thrash the course the coming morning.
This year’s event was played under sun strewn skies. Even the notorious North Foreland wind did not appear and made it a most pleasurable day to contest the trophy. Morning scores reflected this and there were two great scores of 39 points. Ian Hatt took the trophy as he had the better back nine from Steve Rigden. Last year’s champion Marnie Barber (Hi-Way Services) put up a superb defence of her title and shot a commendable 37 points to finish in forth spot. The scratch prize went to the North Foreland League Team captain Gavin Webb, closely followed by Hi-Ways own Danny O’Reilly. Nearest the pin went to Ian Hatt and the ever popular Longest Drive to James Selsby (huge hit into a breeze that caused some debate in the bar as to if he had consumed too much Port and Brandy....).
The afternoon nine holes were dominated by the first hole in one the tournament has seen. The culprit was none other than Hi-Way Services Managing Director Andy O’Reilly. This was some achievement as it was on the difficult 195 yard par three 18th hole. A sound five wood that flew arrow straight onto the green and into the hole. This was Andy’s first hole in one on the main course, although it has been said he has had a few on his computer... Well done Andy for buying the drinks.
On a serious note, the day also donates monies to a major charity. This year we sent a cheque to the Kent Multiple Sclerosis Therapy Centre based in Canterbury which was greatly appreciated.
The day concluded with a meal and prize giving in the North Foreland restaurant, then onto Broadstairs to discuss the day’s history. Many thanks to Andy and his team for their fantastic sponsorship.
We now look forward to the 2016 Powelly Plate which will be the 25th Anniversary.
